In the summer of 2006, Nicole Wight was working on the Fort Drum Army Base in New York. Her husband, Aaron, was in Afghanistan, on his fourth overseas deployment. Nicole and Aaron’s children — Mackenzie and Michael — were spending the summer with Nicole’s parents in Jackson, New Jersey.
On the afternoon of August 9, Nicole’s mother and the two children were in a terrible car crash. Both children sustained severe traumatic brain injuries.
Her mother did not survive.
Mackenzie, then 6, suffered an open skull fracture. Michael, 4 at the time, had a closed skull fracture and many other injuries. Since then, Nicole has been a tireless advocate for her children.
Nicole, Aaron, Mackenzie, and Michael live in Jackson, New Jersey.
