Not being able to run has made coping with the lingering side effects of her illness, which include reduced lung capacity, cognitive delays, edema, neuropathy and post-traumatic stress disorder, much more difficult. In the past, “running was how I was able to escape,” she said.

The incident on Dhaulagiri was not the first time Richards experienced a mental health episode during a high-stakes expedition. In 2012, he left Everest after suffering a PTSD-related panic attack on the mountain.

“If they sting, they give up their life, just like a soldier,” said Eric Grandon. He chose to channel his energy and focus into beekeeping. As a 20 year veteran of the U.S. Army, Grandon was looking for a way to cope with the anxiety.

Dr. Nomi Levy-Carrick, a psychiatrist at Brigham and Women's Hospital, said that while first responders have been trained to deal with the physical and mental demands of their job, that training does not make them invulnerable to the trauma they witness -- and may internalize -- while on scene.
