Stand Down: Veterans Village of San Diego

Learn about this powerful community-based intervention program designed to help homeless veterans "combat" life on the streets.

[An estimated 40% of San Diego County's homeless are military veterans.] [Organized by the Veterans Village of San Diego, Stand Down was founded in 1988 by Dr. Jon Nachison and Robert Van Keuren, with the conviction that the overwhelming number of homeless veterans on the streets of America is unacceptable and that the veteran community must respond.] [Veterans helping Veterans.] [Each year nearly 1,000 military veterans are assisted and supported at VVSD's Stand Down.] >>Good morning, sir. Welcome to Stand Down. [Voice of: Congressman Bob Filner (D-CA)] I mean, when we look at Veterans Village, we know we can do this. We know we can do this. We have the money to do it. It's the will. We have comprehensive approach--a holist approach. There are dentists and counselors and job people and alcohol abuse people--on and on. We know what to do. Why aren't we doing it every day of the year? The three days in Stand Down are wonderful, and we see our community come together. But we're the richest nation in the history of the world because of you guys who are veterans. So we should be doing this every day. [Voice of: Congresswoman Susan Davis (D-CA)] It's the lives of those people who gave to our country and whose families gave to our country through you--through many who have survived today-- that we can repay you in some small way. [Dr. Jon Nachison, Stand Down Co-Founder] As we begin our graduation, I need all of the squad leaders-- [Men singing.] [Military cadence.] Left, left, left, right, left. >>♪ Oh, when Quebec goes marching in, Oh, when Quebec goes marching in, Oh, I want to be in that number, When Quebec goes marching in. >>Thank you. >>Congratulations, bud. >>Thanks a lot, guys. >>Thank you [Voice of: Congressman Bob Filner (D-CA)] We know how much--how much you have sacrificed. And we're going to be dedicated to say-- we're going to keep the Stand Down going as long as we have to, but I want to get to a point where we don't need it--that we take care of everybody. >>God bless you. [Organized by Veterans Village of San Diego (VVSD).] [National Stand Down is held each July in San Diego.] [The model for over 200 Stand Down events held nationally, Stand Down is funded by private donations.] [You may donate to VVSD online at] [Thank you.]
