The Borgess Brain and Spine Institute is part of Borgess Health’s network of more 130 sites of care in 15 southern Michigan cities. Borgess owns or is affiliated with eight hospitals, a nursing home, ambulatory care facilities, home health care, physician practices, managed care services, a cancer center and an air ambulance service.
The brain injury program at Covenant, accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities and Health Facilities Accreditation Program, offers inpatient treatment for adults and adolescents (ages 14+). The program treats any of the following conditions:

• Brain infection (encephalitis, meningitis )
• Metabolic disorders (diabetic coma, insulin shock)
• Toxic exposure (substance abuse, toxic agent inhalation

Founded more than 20 years ago, Irvine Head Injury, Inc. offers rehabilitation and residential services to brain injury patients. These include: assisted living apartments; sub-acute rooms; and adult foster care homes. Each setting is designed and maintained to provide a homelike environment. The program is licensed by the State of Michigan and CARF accredited.
Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital offers inpatient care, driver rehabilitation and adaptive sports, and a follow-up brain injury clinic to brain injury patients. Mary Free Bed works with patients and their family members to achieve/regain physical, psychological, social, and vocational functions. The involvement of family members and friends is highly encouraged.
The Memory and Attention Training Center is part of Munson Healthcare’s Occupational Health & Medicine services. The Center treats adolescents and adults who have difficulty with memory, attention, organization, and problem-solving. Specifically, the Center focuses on: acquired brain injury; cognitive impairment; impaired brain function; memory changes; and organizational problems. Occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech-language pathology are provided, as well as vocational/professional support. Treatment focuses on: activities of daily life; emotional adjustment; attention;
A program of NeuroRestorative Michigan, our Ann Arbor location offers Structured Community Programs for Brain Injury and Transitional Services in community-based settings. The services listed below may be offered by our staff and other professionals on-site or in the community. NeuroRestorative also coordinates or assists participants in accessing additional services from other health professionals and local service providers as necessary.
Origami Brain Injury Rehabilitation Center is the result of an alliance between Michigan State University and Peckham Incorporated. Michigan State University provides medical and rehabilitation services, and Peckham provides residential management and vocational training for patients who have experienced a traumatic brain injury. The Origami program is located 5 miles from the Michigan State University Campus on Sandhill Road in Mason, Michigan. The residential building resembles a large ranch style farm home.
Garden City Apartments Program offers full access to Rainbow Rehabilitation's brain injury therapy team and treatment facilities. Individual therapy, group activities, home-based programs, case management services, nursing and recreational opportunities are among the services available. There are also vocational services, transportation, household maintenance support, help with money management and community reintegration services. At Rainbow, therapy programs are developed on an individual basis.
The Oakland Treatment Center, located in downtown Farmington, houses Rainbow Rehab's pediatric and adolescent brain injury programs. The facility also serves adults with brain and/or spinal cord injuries. This center features a sensory integration room, private treatment rooms, modern therapy equipment, an accessible kitchen, a library and computer room, a fitness center, a gym, and a therapeutic swimming pool.
The Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan (RIM) has a 26-bed unit dedicated to brain injury rehabilitation. In addition to brain injury, RIM treats patients suffering from other serious injuries or illnesses. RIM is also home to the Southeastern Michigan Traumatic Brain Injury System (SEMTBIS), one of 16 Centers of Excellence for the care and treatment of persons with traumatic brain injury. Brain injury rehabilitation patients work with therapists on everyday living skills such as dressing, bathing, walking and cooking.
The Southeastern Michigan Traumatic Brain Injury System (SEMTBIS) is a traumatic brain injury research program funded through the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR), U.S. Department of Education.
SEMTBIS is housed at the Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan (RIM) in Detroit, Michigan. RIM is part of the Detroit Medical Center (DMC) which is a network of non-profit academic health care facilities that are associated with Wayne State University (WSU).
Located in a Romulus, MI neighborhood near the NeuroCare Center, the Romulus Neuro Skills Center offers day services and programming. The facility has a kitchen, activity room and entertainment area, as well as spaces for private treatments. The Center also houses Special Tree's Residential Administration, Learning Systems, and Human Resource Offices.
The Special Tree Student Center offers services created specifically to serve the needs of children and teens with brain injuries. The programs focus on self-awareness, community exploration and peer relationships. Pediatric physiatrist Dr. Charles Pelshaw serves as the Medical Director for all of Special Tree’s Children’s Services. An interdisciplinary rehabilitation team works with each student and their family to improve functional skills and increase independence. Programs include: Discover! Summer Rehabilitation Program (June-August), Discover!
Special Tree's Midland Neuro Skills Center serves as the hub for Special Tree’s Mid-Michigan locations. A full services outpatient center, it is a stand alone clinic and administrative office in Midland, MI. The center provides a therapy kitchen and treatment space as well as office, administrative, and common areas. Formerly known as Head Injury Therapy Services, Special Tree's Mid-Michigan Rehabilitation Program has been serving the rehabilitation needs of the tri-city Michigan area for more than twenty years.
Located in Freeland, MI, this four bedroom ranch facility is just outside Saginaw. The facility is part of Special Tree's Residential Living program.
Located in Riverview, this ranch is part of Special Tree's residential program. The house has five bedrooms, four bathrooms, and a kitchen and dining room.
This six-bedroom home was renovated in 2007 to serve the needs of children and teens with brain injuries. Located near downtown Royal Oak, the facility is close to parks and nature trails. College style suites provide private rooms for every resident, with fully accessible roll-in showers. The home has recreation areas, including a billiard room and media room for movies, games and entertainments. Common areas are used for group activities, study time, family visits or personal time. Residents build skills in the areas of independence, self management, and emotional stability.
