Gillibrand outlines new legislation to address traumatic brain injuries in U.S. service members

U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) visited the American Legion in Endicott Friday to announce legislation that would address traumatic brain injuries among veterans and service members. Service members can end up with traumatic brain injuries in a variety of ways, such as combat injuries or accidents. But growing evidence suggests the shock waves that come from firing weapons, such as artillery rounds—even during training—can also do damage to the brain.

The Boston University study of 481 dead athletes reveals that most people with CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) developed parkinsonism, and CTE appears to be driving the parkinsonism symptoms in most cases.

How Vietnam vets help others understand ‘Moral Injury,’ a type of PTSD

After veterans returned from the Vietnam War, which wound down 50 years ago, they struggled to adjust. That’s been true for combat vets before that war and since. For Vietnam vets, a diagnosis of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder wasn’t possible until the 1980s. More recently – around 2009 – psychological experts further refined PTSD with the term “moral injury.”
