Post-traumatic stress disorder claims by Minneapolis police are putting pressure on the city’s self-insurance fund and driving workers’ compensation claims to the highest number in at least a decade. 

Losing a parent or other primary caregiver is one of the most stressful things that can happen in a child’s life — putting them at risk of a trajectory of depression and post-traumatic stress, as well as physical manifestations of grief, such as heart problems.

Two-thirds of military teens want to follow in their parents’ footsteps. But “The kids are not okay,” wrote the researchers in this survey, conducted by Bloom: Empowering the Military Teen, and the National Military Family Association.

Many programs and people are working on the situation, trying to bring the suicide numbers down. They include Dr. Alan Teo, a psychiatrist at the VA in Portland and an associate professor of psychiatry at Oregon Health & Science University.

“As former secretaries of the Department of Veterans Affairs, we understand firsthand the challenges active-duty service members and veterans face and the need for their peers, friends, and family to lift them up,” the former VA Secretaries sent to Congress reads.

Those who participated in the 20-mile "Trail to Zero" also said they're finding peace in the saddle.

"I came back with a lot of mental health issues," said Jonathan Bittner of Harleysville, Montgomery County.
