Top Four Concussion Screener Apps for Athletes

Smartphone apps that check for brain injuries in athletes.

Before jumping headfirst into the next sports season, make sure you are prepared to deal with brain injuries before they occur. Check out what you can take to the bleachers and sidelines for athlete safety on your Smartphone. That’s right, for concussion safety, there are applications, or “apps,” available for the iPhone or Android that could help screen for mild traumatic brain injury, or TBI, in athletes. Symptoms, tests, and reports can be accessed right there by the court or field.

Here are four concussion screening apps that can help determine if a brain injury has occurred.

Keep in mind that an app does not replace the advice of a doctor; dial 911 if you think someone may have sustained a concussion. And please note that does not endorse these or any specific products.

Concussion Recognition and Re

Price: Free (Android), $0.99 (iTunes)

Concussion Recognition and Response was developed by Dr. Gerard Gioia, a pediatric neuropsychologist at the Children’s National Medial Center in Washington, DC and the director of SCORE concussion program. The app, launched through PAR, Inc., is designed for the Android, iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. It is primarily for parents and coaches. Multiple symptoms are listed on a page where the application asks for a yes or no response, which keeps the assessment quick and easy to complete. The app alerts parents or coaches if a concussion is suspected, and then gives information on how to respond. After the time of the injury, the app provides concussion management advice for the athlete’s recovery.

The Sport Concussion Assessment Tool 2 was developed primarily for medical and health professional use. The iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad app can be used for a baseline test, or pre-season and pre-concussion evaluations, which help interpret an athlete’s individualized, post-injury scores. A standardized method is used to evaluate injured athletes for concussions using common questions and concussion screening techniques. The tests can be saved on this version of the app, and e-mailed to other health professionals.

The Concussion app from Sports Safety Labs LLC is designed for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. Lists of signs, symptoms, and quick access to 911 are included for free, along with a map to find the nearest hospital. For a $4.99 in-app purchase, a baseline evaluation and a post-injury evaluation can be accessed, and a score is given out at the end of the assessment. The injured athlete’s current location can be sent for rescue. The app is for athletic trainers, coaches, and health personnel. Reports can be sent to the physician. In turn, physicians can notify the coaches and sports league of patient reports, and send information on when the athlete can return to play.
