The family plays a critical role in people with brain injury,
and there's good research to show that people who have good family support
are more likely to be able to get back into the community
are more likely to get back to their job,
are more likely to have a happier lifestyle overall.
Why? People with brain injury need those supports around them,
need the people who cared for them before to continue to care for them,
to maximize their chance of a good recovery,
to make sure to also be their advocate.
And people after brain injury really need advocates,
and family, obviously, is going to most likely be your best advocate for you.

Dr. Brian Greenwald is currently the medical director of Center for Head Injuries and the associate medical director of JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute (www.njrehab.org). He is a clinical associate professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and is also the medical director for Rehabilitation Specialists, a day and residential program for persons with brain injury, in Fair Lawn, NJ (www.rehab-specialists.com).
