Elliot J. Roth, MD is the Paul B. Magnuson Professor and chairman of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, chairman of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and interim medical director of the Brain Injury Medicine and Rehabilitation Program at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC), where he also previously served as former senior vice president and medical director. He is project director of the Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Stroke Rehabilitation, based at RIC and funded by the US National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR), which he has led for the past 18 years. He currently is project director of the “Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Enhancing the Functional and Employment Outcomes of Individuals Who Experience a Stroke,” and also the “Midwest Regional Traumatic Brain Injury Model System,” both of which are funded by grants totaling nearly $6 million from NIDRR. He also leads several other research projects, funded by Federal agencies and private foundations, primarily focused on neurorehabilitation. Dr. Roth is actively involved in patient care, teaching, research, program leadership, and community service.

He has an active medical practice, specializing in the care and treatment of patients with a variety of physically disabling conditions, focusing predominantly on the rehabilitation management of patients with stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and a number of other neurological conditions. He also is actively involved in teaching Residents, Medical Students, Post-Doctoral Fellows, other Physicians, Allied Health Professionals, and the general public. He directs weekly Chairman’s Rounds with Medical Students and Residents, a monthly Fellow Seminar, daily clinical teaching rounds, and many didactic lectures. He is internationally recognized as an expert in rehabilitation of people with stroke. He is a frequent invited guest speaker, visiting professor, and expert panel member.

Dr. Roth has published more than 120 peer-reviewed papers, invited review articles, book chapters, and other articles in medical rehabilitation. He also has one patent, for a device to assist people with quadriplegia to improve their breathing function.

Dr. Roth specializes in the rehabilitation of patients with stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury and other disabling conditions. His research and academic interests are in the areas of novel methods to enhance recovery, improve functional outcomes and prevent associated medical conditions for people with disabling conditions.
