Kelli Williams Gary, Ph.D., MPH, OTR/L is a clinical researcher at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and has been a licensed occupational therapist for 14 years. She has published several articles in peer reviewed medical journals on post-injury outcomes following traumatic brain injury (TBI) for minorities and their caregivers and has presented on these topics nationally and internationally. In 1990, Dr. Gary sustained a severe TBI in a motor vehicle crash, which resulted in cognitive deficits, temporary paralysis of her right side, and speech impediments. Since her injury, she has overcome many obstacles to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in occupational therapy from Chicago State University in Chicago, IL, a Master’s of Science and Master’s of Public Health from Columbia University in New York, NY, and a Ph.D. from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. Currently, she is a post-doctoral research fellow at VCU in the department of Rehabilitation Counseling conducting research for minorities with disabilities and organizing a program that mentors minority researchers in rehabilitation research. She is also the vice-chair of the Virginia Brain Injury Council and co-facilitates a brain injury support group sponsored by the Brain Injury Association of Virginia.

Dr. Williams Gary, Your reflections of your own trajectory from patient to scholar are truly inspiring. Please keep sharing so that others can realize that they also can overcome and/or compensate for any limitations from their TBI. Kimberly - Nevada
