A common complication after TBI is increased pressure in the brain, which causes continuing damage after the initial blow. Both of these studies — one looking at children and the other at adults — found that lowering the core temperature (hypothermia) in some cases may help protect the brain. Both authors state more research is needed to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the treatment.
